Leukemia, in essence, is the cancer of the bone marrow that produces blood. The bone marrow starts to produce abnormal amounts of immature white blood cell. The abnormal amounts of white blood cell crowds the bone marrow and even floods the stream but it can not do its proper job of protecting the body from diseases. Leukemia was first discovered and named in 1847 by Dr. Rudolf Virchow. (1,2,3)
There are different types of Leukemia:
Acute: This means that the Leukemia is affecting your body very quickly. Meaning that it can make you sick right away.
Chronic: This means that the Leukemia is affecting your body very slowly. The basic symptoms might not show up for several years.
Lymphocytic: This means the Leukemia is affecting your white blood cells called lymphocytes.
Myelogenous: This means the Leukemia is affecting your white blood cells called myelocytes.
The four main types of Leukemia that occurs are as following:
1. Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (All): Most common in children, however, adults may be affected as well.
2. Acute Myelogenous Leukemia (AML): Affects both adults and children
3. Chronic Lymphoblastic Leukemia (CLL): Most common Leukemia for adults over the age of 55. Children may be affected but rarely. Has the possibility of running in the family.
4. Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia (CML): Affects mostly adults. (1).

- Artificial ionising radiation
- Down Syndrome (4)
What are the symptons of Leukemia?
- Blood Clotting is poor: This means a person may bruise easily or bleed very easily.
- Affected Immune System: Due to the production of immature white blood cells, the white blood cells can not do its job protecting the body from foreign diseases causing the immune system to be weaker.
- Some other minor symptoms can consist of but are not limited to night sweats, flu and chills. (1,3)
